The Awards Committee is comprised of past Awards recipients as well as two PTA members appointed by the current year's PTA presidents. This team of parents and teachers will get together and organize the collection of nominations. They will then meet to discuss the nominations and award the honors.
This committee has nothing whatsoever to do with awards or incentives for students. It is to recognize adult leadership and volunteerism, and is a well-respected and important part of PTA's National Vision.
The Outstanding Educator Award was created to recognize individuals who have provided outstanding educational opportunities for children and youth that are beyond the normal scope of their jobs. A contribution in the name of the recipient is made by the honoring PTA to the Washington State PTA Financial Grant Program. From these contributions, WSPTA is able to provide grants to freshman students entering post-secondary education.
A Golden Acorn Award is presented, by a local PTA unit or council, to a volunteer in recognition of his/her dedication and service to children and youth. Since the beginning of this program, more than 44,000 Golden Acorns have been presented to volunteers throughout Washington State. A contribution in the name of the recipient(s) is made by the honoring PTA to the Washington State PTA Financial Grant Program. From these contributions, WSPTA is able to provide grants to freshman students entering post-secondary education.
